  • No, unfortunately this feature is not available on iOS.

Setting up Wi-Fi Calling

We would recommend that you enable Wi-Fi Calling while in a local network at home, before travelling overseas.

Data Roaming

To avoid incurring expensive roaming charges, we suggest that you disable data roaming before going overseas.

How do I enable Wi-Fi Calling on my iPhone?

  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network. Follow the below steps in order to enable for Wi-Fi Calling:

  • Step 1
  • Ensure that your iOS software is updated to the latest software version, iOS 9.3 or higher. To check the version of software, go to Settings > General > About > Version. Ensure that the latest Carrier version is available on the device, Cell C 28.2 or higher

  • Step 2
  • If your software version or Carrier settings is outdated, you will be able to update it by downloading the latest version by using your cellular data, connecting to a Wi-Fi Hotspot or via the iTunes application on a PC which is connected to the internet.
  • 2.1. If a customer is downloading the software using his PC and connecting via USB and there is no notification of any updates. The customer must manually check by clicking Check for Update in iTunes. Notification of Carrier settings will pop up once connected to iTunes.
  • 2.2. If a customer is downloading the software using their iPhone. The customer must go into "settings", click on "general", click on "software update". Once the update is complete, iPhones that support Wi-Fi Calling will show Cell C 24.1 within Settings> General > About > Carrier. If not , Select Settings->General -> About. Request for update will popup.

  • Step 3
  • To switch enable or disable Wi-Fi Calling, go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling and select "Enable" or "Disable".

  • Go to Settings > select Mobile Data > Wi-Fi Calling and select "Enable" or "Disable".
  • In areas where the Wi-Fi calling is poor, it may be due to the quality of the Wi-Fi network. This may require the user to disconnect the Wi-Fi calling.

How do I disable roaming before travelling overseas?

  • Go to Settings -> Mobile Data -> Mobile Data Options->Ensure Data Roaming Options is set to Roaming Off

  • Some Android handsets allows you the options of customising the Wi-Fi Calling preferences as indicated below. These options are found by selecting the Settings menu and the More icon on your handset. Handsets without the Wi-Fi Calling preference options will automatically connect to the Wi-Fi Calling service provided you are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

How do I enable Wi-Fi Calling on my Huawei devices?

  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network. By default Wi-Fi Calling should be enabled automatically or go to Settings-> Wireless & networks-> Mobile network-> Select Wi-Fi Calling-> Enable switch next to Wi-Fi Calling.
  • OR
  • Go to your Dialler, Select More (3 vertical dots in top right hand corner) -> Settings ->Scroll down to Wi-Fi Calling and enable the Wi-Fi Calling Switch.

How do I disable Wi-Fi Calling on my Huawei devices?

How do I know I am making a Wi-Fi call on my Huawei device?

  • When your handset is connected to a Wi-Fi network, it will automatically try to register with the network for Wi-Fi Calling. Once the registration is successfully completed, you will see "VoWiFi" icon in the status bar on the top of your handset screen. You will also see the Wi-Fi Calling icon displayed in the dialler (in place of your regular calling icon) when making a call.

How do I enable Wi-Fi Calling on my Samsung device?

  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network. By default Wi-Fi Calling should be enabled automatically.  Follow the below steps in order to enable your Samsung for Wi-Fi Calling:

    Step 1: Wi-Fi calling will only work if "Location" is enabled on the device. For dual sim devices , the SIM slot  requires data to be enabled for that SIM. Note, there is no data charges associated to Wi-Fi calling when the SIM is enabled for data

     Step 3: You can update the device to the latest software by:

    • Using your own data - this will be charged unless you have in bundle value available.
    • Wi-Fi - by connecting to a Wi-Fi Hotspot.
    • Via Samsung Smart Switch Application on PC which needs to be connected to the internet.

    Using your own data Go to Settings -> Select Software update-> Select Download updates manually. The new software will be picked up. 

    Using Wi-Fi Ensure your Wi-Fi is enabled. Go to Settings -> Select About -> Select Download updates manually. The new software will be picked up. Install and thereafter reboot the device.

    Via Samsung Smart Switch Click on the link below and install Samsung Smart Switch onto your PC. www.samsung.com/za/support/smartswitch/. Connect your Samsung device via USB to the PC and open the Smart Switch Application. New software update will be picked up by the device. Follow the instructions of the application and install update.

    Step 4: Go to your Dialler, Select More (3 vertical dots in top right hand corner) -> select Settings ->scroll down to Wi-Fi Calling and enable switch

    On some devices, the WIFI calling icon option is present in the dropdown menu, simply enable from this menu.

    Step 5: Once Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, the icon will show next to the Wi-Fi signal. Note: When on a Wi-Fi call, it is normal for the device to display no signal bars.

    Step 6 : In the event that Wi-Fi signal is poor and calls are being interrupted, it is easy to disable Wi-Fi Calling. Go to your Dialler, Select More (3 vertical dots in top right hand corner) -> select Settings ->scroll down to Wi-Fi Calling and disable switch or on some devices, the WIFI calling icon option is present in the dropdown menu, simply disable from this menu.

Can I use Wi-Fi Calling Overseas?

  • Yes! If you are an international traveller, you can say goodbye to expensive international roaming costs!. Wi-Fi Calling allows you to connect to an international Wi-Fi network and make calls and send SMSs at your local Cell C tariff plan rates. You will be charged for all your calls as if you were in South Africa. Select the "never use cellular network" option while overseas to ensure you only make Wi-Fi calls.

How does it work?

  • Wi-Fi Calling is quite simple. Just follow these steps:
  • Step 1: Connect to your preferred Wi-Fi network.
  • Step 2: Go into your settings on your phone and select "Wi-Fi Calling" to enable the service. You will see the Wi-Fi Calling icon appear on the top of your screen.
  • Step 3: Once you connect for the first time, you will receive a confirmation message - you're now ready to make calls and send SMSs.

  • Go to settings and select Wi-Fi. A list of available Wi-Fi networks will appear. Select a trusted network and enter a password to connect. After the first connection, the handset will automatically connect to that network when in range.

Are Wi-Fi calls comaprable in quality to regular cellphone calls?

  • Yes, when the handset is in range of a reliable Wi-Fi network, Wi-Fi calls and cellphone calls are similar in quality.

What happens if I am not connected to a Wi-Fi connection?

  • Your call will be carried over the cellphone network or local operator network when roaming, depending on handset settings.

Will I be charged for Data on Wi-Fi?

  • Wi-Fi Calling is purely a voice and SMS service. When connected to a Wi-Fi network such as public or private hotspots, data is consumed via the hotspot and not your tariff plan. If a private or public hotspot is not available, you will be charged for data according to your tariff plan rates while in South Africa and roaming rates when abroad.

Can I purchase Cell C voice and Data Bundles while on Wi-Fi Calling?

  • Yes, access to the USSD menu is available via Wi-Fi Calling. Cell C customers will be able to purchase bundles via Wi-Fi Calling. This functionality is handset dependant.

What should I do if I get an error on Wi-Fi Calling?

  • Contact Cell C Customer Care on 084135 and provide the agent with the error code and message displayed on your handset.

The Wi-Fi Calling icon does not appear on my handset screen, what should I do?

  • If the Wi-Fi Calling icon does not appear on your handset screen, it could be because your handset is not connected to a Wi-Fi network. Refer to the Wi-Fi Handsets tab to confirm your handset settings.

The Wi-Fi Network has blocked Wi-Fi Calling.

  • Some networks especially corporate Wi-Fi networks might block the service. Cell C does not have control over this. Contact Cell C Customer Care on 084 135.

What happens if I get disconnected from my Wi-Fi network while I am on a call?

  • If the call is disconnected, try to call again. The call could disconnect due to a weak Wi-Fi hotspot signal or the Wi-Fi network connection has timed out. An error message will be displayed together with a beeping sound informing the customer that the call has dropped.

How do I know that I am making a Wi-Fi call and not a normal Cell C call?

  • The dial button on your handset will change to a similar icon as indicated below when successfully connected to a Wi-Fi network. If the dialer does not change to the icon below, your call will be made over the Circuit Switch Network. Refer to WiFi Handsets tab to check the Wi-Fi icon for your phone

Does my bill show that I made a Wi-Fi call? How would this reflect?

  • Wi-Fi calls will be displayed as Wi-Fi calls on the bill and standard calls will be displayed as it is currently displayed on the bill.

  • You can purchase a USIM at any Cell C Store.

How do I know whether I have a CELL C USIM?

Can I call or SMS someone that is not on Wi-Fi Calling?

  • Yes, calls can be made and received to non Wi-Fi Calling handsets on any network across the globe.

Can I check my balances via Wi-Fi Calling?

Can I use devices from other networks for Wi-Fi Calling?

  • For customers porting into Cell C from MTN and Telkom Mobile, the device software will need to be updated. Vodacom devices will not work as the software is not compatible. Cell C will send a message with a link to all compatible devices for an over-the-air update.

What message will I see if my device is not Wi-Fi Calling compatible?

  • Refer to the Wi-Fi Handsets tab to check if your device is supported by Cell C for Wi-Fi Calling.

My Wi-Fi network at the office will not let me make a Wi-Fi call, What can I do?

  • Wi-Fi networks can block the call, based on the settings of the Wi-Fi network. Cell C cannot control third party Wi-Fi networks. If it is a corporate network, Cell C can provide guidance to your IT department in order to enable Wi-Fi Calling. For public hotspots, we cannot assist technically on changing these settings. Contact Cell C Customer Care on 084135.

Can I use an always on hotspot for Wi-Fi Calling?

  • Cell C has partnered with Always On to utilise their hotspots for Wi-Fi Calling. If you are in an Always On location, you will be able to utilise the hotspot for Wi-Fi Calling. Always On hotspots will provide a complimentary service for Wi-Fi Calling only and not internet browsing.

Wi-Fi Calling Terms and Conditions

  1. It is important that you understand and agree to these terms and conditions in order for you to participate in the Wi-Fi Calling service.
  2. All standard Terms and Conditions of Cell C (Pty) Ltd and Cell C Service Provider Company (Pty) Ltd applies to the Wi-Fi Calling service and the Wi-Fi Calling bundles.
  3. All prices and usage rates advertised include VAT, unless otherwise stated.
  4. Standard RICA rules and processes apply.

How to access the Wi-Fi Calling service?

  1. The Wi-Fi Calling service is only available on Wi-Fi Calling enabled devices, and only to customers on Cell C Post-paid, Hybrid and Prepaid packages.
  2. Before making use of the service, you are required to be provisioned for the Wi-Fi Calling service, as follows:
    1. You are required to have the applicable Wi-Fi Calling software installed on your Wi-Fi Calling enabled device;
    2. You are required to have an active Cell C USIM.
    3. In addition, access to a Wi-Fi network is required for the service to work, as well as the required airtime value or inclusive value.
    4. You are responsible for ensuring that the applicable Wi-Fi Calling "icon" is displayed on your device, prior to attempting to use the Wi-Fi Calling services. Cell C shall not be held liable for any charges incurred in the event that a call is made or SMS sent when not connected to a Wi-Fi network/hotspot.

Features of the Wi-Fi Calling service

  1. Wi-Fi Calling features are device dependent. Not all features are available on all devices. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are familiar with the particular features on your device for usage of the Wi-Fi Calling service.
  2. The availability of Wi-Fi Calling, as well as the strength of the Wi-Fi network, is not dependant on the Cell C network. Cell C is not responsible for, and does not guarantee, the availability or quality of the Wi-Fi Calling service.
  3. In the event of a weak Wi-Fi network signal, the Wi-Fi Calling service may not be available. If a Wi-Fi call is made and the Wi-Fi network is weak or unstable, the call will not automatically change over to a circuit switch network. The Wi-Fi call will be terminated in this instance.
  4. While making use of the Wi-Fi Calling service, you must be aware that devices using wireless connections may be vulnerable to unauthorized attempts to access any data, personal information and software that may be stored on the device. It is therefore important to ensure the wireless network is secure before attempting to connect to a Wi-Fi network in order to make use of this the WiFi calling service. Cell C shall will not be held liable for any unauthorised access or loss of data, software and/or personal information in this instance.
  5. Only emergency service calls will revert back to the circuit switch network, where service is available.
  6. SMS is a feature of the Wi-Fi Calling service. This means that if you are using a Wi-Fi enabled device, and have access to the Wi-Fi Calling service, you may send SMS's over the Wi-Fi network, if available.

Costs of the Wi-Fi Calling service

  1. Wi-Fi Calling and SMS's will deplete from your available Cell C tariff plan or your FREE/inclusive airtime value, where applicable.
  2. In order to make use of the Wi-Fi Calling service, you are required to have the relevant airtime value available.
  3. If no FREE or inclusive airtime value is available at the time that the Wi-Fi Calling service is used, out of bundle usage will apply.

Wi-Fi Calling Bundles

  1. In order to make use of the Wi-Fi Calling service, you are required to have the relevant airtime value available. You are encouraged to purchase a Wi-Fi Calling bundle.
  2. Once a Wi-Fi Calling bundle is purchased, all Wi-Fi calls made and SMS's sent will automatically deplete from the bundle (during the applicable validity period of the bundle) and not from the available tariff plan. Once the bundle has depleted or expired, Wi-Fi Calling and SMS's will deplete from your available Cell C tariff plan.
  3. Wi-Fi Calling bundles are available to Cell C customers on Post-paid, Hybrid and/or Prepaid packages. You can buy either a once-off Wi-Fi Calling bundle or a monthly recurring Wi-Fi Calling bundle.
  4. The bundles are subject to a Fair Usage Policy.
  5. Once the bundle is depleted or expired, out of bundle usage will apply if no other FREE or inclusive value is available.
  6. Specifics in respect of the Wi-Fi Calling bundles are set out below:

Validity/Expiry of the Wi-Fi Calling bundles:

  1. The Wi-Fi Calling bundles are available for thirty days from date of activation.
  2. You can either purchase a once-off Wi-Fi Calling bundle or a monthly recurring Wi-Fi Calling bundle.
  3. The Wi-Fi Calling bundles will be pro-rated depending on time of purchase in a particular month.
  4. There will be no carry-over of any unused value. When the Wi-Fi Calling bundle expires, any unused value will be lost.

Wi-Fi Calling for International Roaming

  1. You do not require activation of international roaming on your device in order for you to use the Wi-Fi Calling service while abroad.
  2. In order to make use of the Wi-Fi Calling service, you need to be in a secured Wi-Fi network/hotspot.
  3. In order to make use of the Wi-Fi Calling service, you are required to have the relevant airtime value available. You are encouraged to purchase a Wi-Fi Calling bundle or prepaid airtime.
  4. All Wi-Fi calls made and SMS's sent will automatically deplete from your Wi-Fi Calling bundle or your available Cell C tariff plan.
  5. You are responsible to ensure that you are connected to a secured Wi-Fi network while making use of the Wi-Fi Calling services. Should you not be connected to a secure Wi-Fi network, standard international roaming charges will apply.
  6. You are responsible to ensure that the applicable Wi-Fi Calling "icon" is displayed on your device, before attempting to use the Wi-Fi Calling services abroad. Cell C will not be held liable for any charges incurred in the event that a call is made or SMS sent when not connected to a Wi-Fi network/hotspot.

Exclusions to the Wi-Fi Calling service

  1. International roaming, by default, will not be enabled. You will be required to contact Cell C and enable international roaming before to travelling abroad.
  2. MMS is not a feature of the Wi-Fi Calling service and you will not be able to send MMSs over the Wi-Fi network while using the Wi-Fi Calling service.
  3. Wi-Fi Calling is a Voice and SMSs only service. When connected to a Wi-Fi network your data will be deducted from your main tariff plan, but from the Wi-Fi network.

General

  1. Any valued added services added to the account will be deducted from your available airtime value.
  2. All Premium rated or special number calls and MMSs will be charged to you as out of bundle usage according to the applicable tariff plan.
  3. Data and/or airtime value is required on the Wi-Fi network to make a Wi-Fi call.
  4. All standard terms and conditions in respect of your main tariff plan will apply.
  5. You must be aware that the Wi-Fi Calling service may not be supported by all Wi-Fi networks/hotspots. Cell C shall not be held liable in this instance.
  6. All Wi-Fi calls made, whether in South Africa or abroad, will terminate after sixty minutes. You will need to re-establish a secure Wi-Fi connection before resuming with your Wi-Fi call. Cell C reserves the right to suspend the Wi-Fi Calling service and its benefits in its sole discretion, including when any fraudulent activity is suspected, and if the outcome of an investigation proves that fraudulent activity occurred, Cell C shall be entitled to terminate the Wi-Fi Calling service.
  7. Cell C may amend, modify or otherwise change these terms and conditions in its sole and absolute discretion on notice to you and the amended version will be displayed in the same media as these terms and conditions. By continuing to participate in, and make use of, the Wi-Fi Calling service you agree and understand that you will be bound by the amended terms and conditions.
  8. It is important that you understand that all customers that make use of the Wi-Fi Calling service indemnify Cell C, its directors, affiliates, members, partners, employees, agents, consultants, suppliers, contractors and sponsors against any loss or damages, either direct, indirect, consequential or otherwise, arising from their use of the Wi-Fi Calling service.
  9. Cell C has the right to withdraw the Wi-Fi Calling service in its sole and absolute discretion and will notify you if it chooses to do so. You will not have a claim against Cell C in this event.
