CellC Take a Girl Child to Work Day Background

Over the past 18 years, Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day® has made a meaningful contribution towards shaping the career choices and future aspirations of thousands of girls.

The theme, #MoreThanADay, focuses on innovative ways in which we can advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and all girls. 2021 marks the 19th year that Cell C has successfully taken the lead in empowering young women by exposing them to real workplace experiences, in preparation for a brighter future. On 27 May 2021, we call on industry leaders, companies, organisations and entrepreneurs to help create unprecedented opportunities and exposure for young women and girls to play an active role in the building of a more inclusive society.

Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day® contributes towards the development of strong, smart, bold learners who will, in the future, become vibrant contributors to the economy and leading job creators in our country.

The initiative contributes to the following objectives:
The African Union, acknowledging that a lot of work still needs to be done on the African Continent to bring women into the epicentre of development, has declared 2010-2020 the 'African Women's Decade' under the theme 'Grassroots approach to gender equality and women's empowerment'.

The Africa Agenda 2063 aims to have 50% female representation in decision-making by 2020. This vision of gender parity by 2020 requires both the public and the private sector to work together to ensure gender equality and women empowerment in all sectors relevant to the economy.

The vision of Africa in 2063 is a continent with full gender parity, with women at centre-stage in all sectors relevant to the economy. The successful implementation of this strategic framework will go a long way in destroying the economic and political glass ceiling that restricts women's progress and integration into the economic mainstream. In order to achieve this, the development of the Girl Child should be at centre of our work.

What's new in 2021?

The campaign slogan - #MoreThanADay - is aimed at encouraging Organisations to host three (3) workshop days in 2021 as opposed to the traditional one day per annum.

For the second time, we welcome male learners to participate in light of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on all learners' academics and career aspirations. This is in line with our #EveryLearnerCounts initiative which recognises that now, more than ever, South African learners need the support of the corporate environment to build on their hopes for the future.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Take A Girl Child To Work Day® workshops will be hosted online using Google Meet or any other online platform of your choosing. This means that learners will gather at their schools, where they will participate in three, day-long virtual workshops.

Learners will need to adhere to social distancing practices and ensure that they wear masks, carry hand sanitiser and prioritise COVID-19 safety measures throughout the workshop.

Learners will be introduced to the CellCgirl platform, which will expose them to various learning materials, resources and guidance.

What is CellCgirl?

CellCgirl is an interactive, online platform that connects young women aged 14 to 24 with access to educational, economic and employment resources and opportunities. It complements the legacy of Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day® and extends its mission to #MoreThanADay.

The platform engages high school girls from the start of their subject-selecting phase and provides information, resources and guidance that they may not have easy access to. It offers advice on life and studies, links to bursaries and internships, a portal for advice, CV-creation and career guidance.

The overall purpose of the platform is to empower young women to make healthy decisions for their future while encouraging them to stay in school, and equipping them with skills and resources that would make navigating through school easier.

This platform is zero-rated for Cell C customers.

2021 Campaign

CellC continues to lead by example and host not one, but three online workshops to a group of girl and boy learners.

Participating companies are encouraged to join us in doing this. Once organisations have completed registration, they will be provided with three, FREE, pre-drafted themed presentation and tools.

The presentations are inspiring and motivational with practical examples for the learners to apply. They provide advice, information and guidance on everyday life topics and studies, introduce participants to useful resources such as links to bursaries and internships and free study material, and provide an avenue towards careers they may be interested in, while teaching them how to create a CV.
